His kids were Birchard Austin, James WebbCook, Joseph Thomoson, George Crook, Fanny, Scott Russell, and Manning Force Hayes. His wife was named Lucy.
Although he was nearly 40 at the outbreak of the Civil War, Hayes joined as a three-year volunteer and was commissioned as a Major of the Twenty-third Regiment, Ohio volunteer Infantry on June 27, 1861 despite having no previous military experience.
He was Governor of Ohio twice. In 1865-67,he was a member of U.S. House of Representatives. In 1845 admitted to the bar. In 1858-60 Cincinnati City Attorney.
